5th February Cusco – Abancay 121 miles

We wake to a warm morning and are able to finally dry our suits from 3 days agoand also our trunks and towels. Breakfast and a quick Skype to home starts the morning well for me and we get packed to go.
Martin heads off to the square to take a couple of photos and when I join him he is having his boots polished, I follow suit as we may get more rain.
Well by the time we are ready to leave more rain is exactly what we got, it absolutely poured down. Had we been on the road that would have been fine but neither of us fancies leaving in those conditions.
So as it is now 12 o’clock we have a coffee and some soup and I retrieve my netbook and start catching up with the blog. The rain eased and finally reduced to a slight drizzle so we got underway at 3.10, hmmm, that could limit our range today.
It took us about ½ an hour to find the right road out of the City, ther are so few signposts here, yhe first sign to Nasca we found was 10 miles out of the City. Our progress did not improve dramatically after that as this road takes us over the mountains and so lots of bends and hairpins.
We started at about 3600 masl and climbed to 4300, decended to 1500 and climbed again to 4000 and decended to 2400. We reached a town at about 6 pm and decided to stay as I doubt that we will see another for a while, and we have only travelled 121 miles, when you look at the map we have probably done ¼ or a 1/3 of that in straight line distance.
The was great to ride when it was dry, we went up into te clouds at one time, but we had to be a bit careful as there were a few sections of gravel and also there had been a few rock falls as well, but a good ride.
We found a hotel and then had some dinner a little later and when we came out it was raining, only drizzle, but by the time we went to bed it was hammering. Wew have woken this morning and guess what, it is still raining, that’s why the roads wash away!
Lets see how today goes, we hav\e a similar road to continue our journey on but once we arrive we should kiss altitude goodbye.
