8th March Riohacha – Taganga 285 miles

The plan today is to is to go to El Cabo, one of the furthest points Northwest on the coast, we are told it is 2 hours on pavement and 1 hour off road, we will see what the off road is like and decide whether to go all the way.
As soon as we left we missed the coast road, probably because it was a farm track, and so we progress along a good road and my satnav is saying turn left at every farm track we pass but Martins is happy to carry on straight, we have different maps loaded to give us the best or worst of both worlds.
When mine suggests we do a U turn it is a bit late as we have passed all the potential turnings and are headed straight for Venezuala, by the time I have communicated this to Martin the border control is but 50-100 metres ahead. Back 20 miles and there is a paved road on the right signposted Cabo, this then becomes gravel, mud and sand, not much sand thankfully, and is a fairly good surface but this then becomes quit lumpy after 10 or 15 miles. At this point I question what is at El Cabo as I don’t fancy doing another 30 odd miles on this surface to see a little village and then have it all to do again on the way back. The guide book suggests swimming and believe it or not, golf, well as I have left my golf bats at home I won’t miss that so I suggested we wimp out and although Martin is happy to carry on we retrace our steps to the main road and then decide to head back to Taganga.
We have a great run and manage to cover 170 miles in just over 3 hours, excellent by our recent history.
As we arrive in Taganga the sun is going down and it looks to be the best sunset we have seen, so straight down to the front to get a few photos and then the task of finding accommodation. Lots are full but ironically we end up at the first place we triad when we first arrived last week and success.
We are going to stay here tomorrow and plan our last few days and then we head South towards Bogota.
